Imaging vs. non-imaging optical systems. Geometrical theory of imaging - definitions, laws, principles, concepts, equations. Ideal imaging. Stigmatic imaging, Cartesian surfaces. Optical elements, optical systems as components of basic optical instruments. Diffraction and its influence on optical imaging. Diaphragms, apertures, pupils in optical systems. Physical perfect ("diffraction limited") imaging. Resolution ability in case of physical perfect imaging - resolution criteria, point spread function, optical transfer function. Design parameters of optical systems, optical materials and their properties. Imaging in case of real optical systems - aberrations of optical systems. Geometric and wave description of basic aberrations in third order space - monochromatic and chromatic aberrations. Ray tracing through optical systems. Evaluation of optical systems aberrations in optical programs. Basic parameters of optical systems and the "pre-design" of optical systems.
