Annotation: Introduction of basic terms of materials science, internal structure of metal materials and identification of phases in metal systems. To give an overview of technical iron alloys, their structure, properties and basic method of their modification. To show the overview of non-ferrous and selected non-metal technical materials.

Classification of technical materials. Ferrous metals. An overview of non-ferrous metals and non-metal technical materials (glass, ceramics, plastics).
Metals internal structure. Metallic bond. Crystal lattices and their defects. Miller indices.
Fundamental thermodynamics of metals. Diffusion in metal systems.
Phase transformations in metal systems. Pure metals and alloys crystallization. Solid solutions.
Binary equilibrium diagrams. Eutectic, eutectoid and peritectic transformation.
Steels and cast iron crystallization. Equilibrium iron-carbon phase diagrams Fe-Fe3C and Fe-C. Phases in steels and cast irons.
Steels designation. Steel classes. Cast iron kinds.
Isothermal and non-isothermal transformation of austenite. Basics of heat and chemical-heat treatment of metals.
