Annotation: Classification and methods of optics, basic optical phenomena and their applications, an overview of modern optics phenomena.

Course review:
1. Historical development of optics, origin and classification of optical radiation, light sources and detectors, optical properties of the eye, the perception of colors. 2. Propagation of EM radiation in vacuo, plane, spherical and paraboloidal waves, light intensity, optical media, index of refraction. 3. Spectral decomposition of light, phase and group velocity. Microscopic theory of absorption and dispersion, light scattering. 4. Description of the polarization states of light, passage of EM waves through dielectric interface. 5. Propagation of light in anisotropic media, description and realization of polarizing optical elements. 6. Interference and coherence of light, two-beam interference and its applications. 7. Multi-beams interference, reflective and anti-reflective layers. 8. Diffraction of light, classification and description of diffraction phenomena. Light diffraction on circular and rectangular apertures, diffraction of light on a grating. 9. Basic principles of holography. Diffraction limited resolution of optical systems. Principle of operation and applications of dispersive optical elements. 10. Principles of ray optics, optics of inhomogeneous medium, applications of gradient optical elements, Fermat's principle and its application. 11. Paraxial imaging, principle of operation and applications of basic optical elements and systems. 12. Modern optics: principle and applications of laser, basic phenomena of nonlinear optics, principles and application of electro-optics. 13. Demonstration of optical simulations in Oslo Premium and VirtualLab.
