Annotation: 1. To clarify the task and capability of the small units of European West to the students within limits of its history. 2. To transmit to the students the cognition that warfare of European West is established on the tradition of a soldier ? an individual 3. To teach students to comprehend the military structure and the military organization at level of companies, platoons, squats, teams or groups. 4. To explicate connection with both tactic and organization of small units in the one side and with used technology in the other side.

Course review:
The course is focused on the task individual characterization in the armed corps of the West European culture. This course deals with the evolution, mission and structure of small units, which were part of the combat forces in the different epochs. It scans both the position of warrior and consequently the combatant inside the units and the armies. It gives attention not only to the armament and equipment but also to the tactics and organization of the small units. The whole (about forty persons) is meant as the small units. 1. The barbarians against the legions ? at first the defeats, later the victories 2. Vikings, Normans and the christianly martial orders 3. The Knight and his retinue as the basic combat unit of the medieval arms 4. The longbow, the pike and the martial carriage ? the end of the knight age, the shooting weapon ? the end of the castles 5. Mercenaries on the land (the Thirty Years´ War) and sea (the corsairs) 6. The big arms conscription for the sake of the states defence, the repression of individual?s significance 7. The new significance of the small units ? the First War subsequence 8. The platoon in the Second World War and its modifications during the Vietnam War. 9. The mechanized units ? from armoured vehicles to infantry fighting vehicles 10. The soldier system ? the C4IRSTA architecture growth on both the solder individual and the small units´ level. 11. The Network Centric Warfare ? the soldier on the 21st century network and the 21st century network on the soldier
